The Many Triggers of Hashimoto's

The Many Triggers of Hashimoto’s

When I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s in 2009, there was very little information about the many triggers and root causes of Hashimoto’s. There were very few practitioners who were willing to look past Synthroid, and most of them were extremely expensive.

I personally was not able to afford 5-10 thousand dollars to see one of them, so I spent hours searching medical journals for clues in order to find something that worked for me.

I had a dream that the innovative information that helped me would become accessible to every person with thyroid disease, so I decided to write a Hashimoto’s patient guide.

Over the years, I’ve heard a lot of feedback from people who were helped by the strategies that were outlined in the book, Hashimoto’s: The Root Cause. Many have gotten their energy back, lost weight, and got their hair back. Some of them have been able to lower or eliminate their thyroid antibodies, and some have been able to lower and even wean off their medications. This makes me so happy!!

I’m so grateful for the increased awareness that has been going around about Hashimoto’s, such as eating a gluten free diet, adding selenium, and removing fluoride from our water. But not everyone has the same triggers and concerns with Hashimoto’s.

When I started my journey, I thought nutrition would be my roadmap to healing. But as I went deeper, I realized that while some individuals may be able to get into remission through improving their nutrition, there are others who were held back due to infections, toxins, adrenals as well as other triggers.

Disclaimer: The information contained herein is for informational purposes only and should not be construed as medical advice. Please consult your physician for any health problems and before making any medical or lifestyle changes.

Lifestyle changes can result in improved thyroid function and/or an increased absorption of thyroid hormone medications, leading to a lower required dose and possible symptoms of hyperthyroidism at a dose that was previously stable. Please discuss lifestyle changes with your physician and ensure that your thyroid function is monitored every 6-8 weeks while making lifestyle changes. Symptoms of overmedication include, but are not limited to: rapid or irregular heartbeat, nervousness, irritability or mood swings, muscle weakness or tremors, diarrhea, menstrual irregularities, hair loss, weight loss, insomnia, chest pain, and excessive sweating. Do not start, change, increase, decrease or discontinue your medications without consulting with your physician.

I’m hoping I’m one of your 10,000 in remission by the end of next year. Or sooner!

Ashley- Thyroid tissue can regenerate, but the rate at which it does is not always predictable. Thus, some are able to stop the autoimmune attack on their thyroid and regain normal thyroid function. Others can reduce the dose of medications, and others will need to stay on the medications indefinitely. I’m currently working on some protocols to help with tissue regeneration.

Reversing Hashimoto’s means different things to different people. For some, it means a reduction in symptoms and for others it means a reduction in your antibodies. I had both. Here a few articles that might be helpful for you 🙂

In all of the discussions on thyroid no one talks about radiation. It is my understanding 200 military personnel on board the USS Regan are sick with radiation that they were exposed to while going thru the phlume off the coast of Japan. They have been approved to go ahead with the lawsuit against GE and TEPCO. How about our thyroid being exposed to Strontium 90 in the 1950’s.

Jay- Most thyroid conditions result from the immune system attacking the thyroid because the immune system is out of balance. Even when the thyroid is taken out surgically, is ‘dead’, or treated with radioactive iodine the autoimmunity still persists in most cases. Many people will have their thyroids removed, and will develop new autoimmune disorders such as Lupus, Rheumatoid arthritis, etc. The immune system just finds a different target. We need to re-balance the immune system to prevent this (sometimes the autoimmunity can be reversed as well). The gut determines your immune system. With the exception of discussing proper thyroid medication dosing, the majority of my website and my book focuses on balancing the immune system. The info I present is based on my own research and journey for overcoming my autoimmune thyroid condition.

When I asked my endocrinologist about gluten free or special diet for Hashimoto she said no I just need to be on Thyroid meds and my dose will just have to keep going up as needed. She even told me not to believe everything I read on the net. I was and am having issues with muscles and swelling feeling in my leg and she said it had nothing to do with that. I’m very frustrated and dont know what doctor to see. I have SIBO also been on 3 antibiotic so far. Im reading your book Hashimoto protocol and plan on doing the 90 day protocol. A question do I take a magnesium and selenium supplement along with all the liver ,adrenal, and gut supplements ? All supplements are ok to take together ? There is so much to think about and plan.

Dr. Wentz….can I ask if thyroid conditions contribute to salivary gland issues. I have recently over a month had an infection in my mouth where I’ve been for a CT scan with an ENT for a test on my salivary glands. The CT came back normal, but I am still having infection coming from my lower jaw area thru my mouth and it feels like it’s passing thru a nerve or narrow passageway in my lower mouth area. The ENT wants to remove my gland even though the CT scan shows normal. I’m going to get a 2nd opinion from another ENT and an Oral Surgeon, but it seems more now that she may be right. I’m scared to have it taken out as it could affect my tongue.
