As a pharmacist, product safety and superiority is very important to me. Unfortunately, I’ve learned that many supplements are not only ineffective, but some are even downright unsafe.
When I was navigating my own health challenges, I was very skeptical about using supplements. This is because I had learned about various adulterants found in supplements, how some supplement manufacturers don’t actually put the products that are on the label in the bottle, or that the dosages listed on the label may be completely different from what’s in the products.
The truth is that most supplement companies do not undergo the same scrutiny and testing that pharmaceutical products do, because many of the tests which are required of pharmaceutical companies are voluntary for supplement companies. For this reason, most supplement companies do not take the extra steps to test their products to ensure safety and purity. Evaluating the safety, efficacy, and cost of various treatments was a large part of my training as a pharmacist.
And yet, as I began to unpack what was going on with my Hashimoto’s and found that I had various nutrient deficiencies, I realized that supplements would likely be a crucial part of my overall healing journey.
In searching for nutrients to replenish my depletions, I became frustrated when I realized that many supplements used cheap ingredients that were not bioavailable, as well as fillers that could make my condition worse.
It became painfully apparent that not all supplements are created equally.
I learned about professional grade supplements and was excited about the rigorous testing they undergo, as well as my own results with them.
Over the years, I’ve found brands that I trust and that are effective. I even started my own line of supplements, because there were certain formulations I had a hard time finding a trusted source for.
I want to share with you the brands that I personally use and trust, as well as where to buy them. 🙂
I am including a few options for my European and Canadian readers as well!
Here are my favorite supplement companies and resources for sourcing the best quality supplements:
- Rootcology (the one I created)
- Allergy Research Group
- Biotics Research
- Designs for Health
- Douglas Laboratories
- Klaire Labs
- NOW Foods
- Ortho Molecular Products
- Pure Encapsulations
- Thorne
- Xymogen
Here are some places to shop for high quality supplements. 🙂
Rootcology – US
Rootcology is my own brand of supplements, specially formulated for those with thyroid disease. I’m dedicated to creating innovative, bioavailable products that are made with the greatest care, and with the highest quality ingredients available. All of the supplement ingredients have been carefully chosen by yours truly, to address the needs and sensitivities of people with autoimmune thyroid disease. Furthermore, all Rootcology supplements undergo rigorous testing to ensure that the ingredients on the label are safe, effective, and match what’s actually inside the bottle.
In addition to the wide range of supplement options that are available from Rootcology, I’ve created curated kits that align with my programs and book protocols, for things like adrenal support and liver support.
At this time, shipping is not available outside of the US, and I know many of you have been asking about this, so I will add it to my list of projects to research in 2024.
PureRXO – US
I have set up a specialty eStore where you can purchase many of my recommended professional brands, including Pure Encapsulations, Allergy Research Group, and Douglas Laboratories, via PureRXO. Visit my storefront to shop their options and see my recommendations.
Fullscript – US
Another resource for supplements that I have previously only offered to private clients and people in my programs is Fullscript! This is an online resource to get thousands of different high-quality supplements all in one place, with fast shipping directly to your home. You can sign up to access my portal via this page. They have recently updated the portal so that it’s easy for people to use, and easy for me to share protocols with anyone who signs up under me. You will be able to see my top supplement picks, and you’ll also receive 10 percent off your order.
I started my journey into functional medicine because I was trying to heal myself, and I started the Thyroid Pharmacist website 10 years ago to share everything I was learning about healing Hashimoto’s. Since then, I have learned how to heal so many other conditions – from anxiety to eczema, IBS, ulcerative colitis, acid reflux, and even some childhood issues I’m not quite ready to share about… Recently, I have been focusing on beauty and anti-aging protocols.
I have been thinking about the best way to organize and share these protocols with you, but as many of them are not thyroid specific, they probably won’t get an article, Facebook post, or Instagram mention, so I decided I will be adding them to my Fullscript portal and will notify you when they’re available. 🙂
You can sign up to access my Fullscript portal for free here. (I’ll start sending out protocols in January.)
Please note that Rootcology is not found on PureRXO or Fullscript.
If you live outside the US, I also have a few additional resources for you:
- AMRITA: For my international readers (including those in Europe, Africa, Australia, Asia, and South America), Amrita is an online dispensary based in the Netherlands that ships high-quality supplements from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe and everywhere in between. I’ve set up a portal through Amrita, where you can purchase supplements. You must register for an account using my invite code WZ8B1Q in order to access and order supplements from my Amrita portals.
- WELLDIUM: For my European readers, Welldium is an online dispensary providing access to high-quality supplements. Check out the Welldium portal here.
- NATURAL DISPENSARY: For my readers in Ireland, I recommend The Natural Dispensary.
I hope the resources above are helpful for you. I am committed to educating about access to high quality supplements. 🙂
Wishing you well on your health journey!
P.S. For those curious about how expiration dates are calculated, here’s a summary: Expiration dates are based on the furthest date that potency has been tested and verified to be 100% of the amounts listed on the label. Most products do not “expire” and become unsafe (if stored properly), but rather, products can lose potency over time. As such, it is generally recommended to use a product within 2 years of the manufactured date.
P.P.S. If you are interested in saving money and time, then I highly encourage you to sign up for the Subscribe and Save option, where you can have Rootcology supplements automatically shipped to you on a monthly basis — and best of all, you’ll save 10% on each order!
I love interacting with my readers on social media, and I encourage you to join my Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest community pages to stay on top of thyroid health updates and meet others who are following similar health journeys.
