When I was first diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, I left my endocrinologist’s office with more questions than answers. I was told there was nothing I could do except wait until my thyroid was “dead” and take medication for life.
But that wasn’t the full story.
After years of struggling with confusing symptoms and finally receiving a diagnosis, I was left with more questions than answers. If only I had known then what I know now, my healing journey would have been much smoother.
In this episode of The Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations Podcast, I share the ten things I wish my endocrinologist had told me when I was first diagnosed with Hashimoto’s. From the importance of starting thyroid medication early to understanding nutrient deficiencies and dietary changes that can support thyroid health, I break down essential insights that could help shorten your learning curve.
If you’re dealing with Hashimoto’s or hypothyroidism, this episode will give you practical tools to take charge of your own health.
What you’ll learn in this episode:
- Early thyroid medication can make a difference – Starting treatment sooner rather than later can slow disease progression and improve symptoms.
- T3-containing medications can be a game changer – Many people don’t fully recover on T4-only medications like Synthroid; adding T3 can make a huge difference.
- Going gluten-free can help manage Hashimoto’s – Even without celiac disease, many with Hashimoto’s feel significantly better by eliminating gluten.
- Diet impacts thyroid health more than most doctors acknowledge – Blood sugar balance and avoiding inflammatory foods can make a dramatic difference.
- Selenium and Myo-Inositol can lower thyroid antibodies – These nutrients support thyroid function and may even help restore normal levels.
- Not all hypothyroidism is the same – Iodine-deficiency hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s should be treated differently.
- Low ferritin can contribute to hair loss – Proper iron levels are critical for thyroid function and preventing hair shedding.
- Thyroid disorders can cause mood issues – Anxiety, depression, and brain fog are often linked to thyroid dysfunction, not just mental health concerns.
- Tracking thyroid antibodies can monitor progress – Measuring TPO and TG antibodies can help determine if lifestyle changes are working.
- Thyroid function can be restored – With the right interventions, thyroid tissue can heal, and some people may even regain normal function.
If you’re navigating Hashimoto’s, you’re not alone — and you have more control over your health than you might think.
