Below are some product recommendations that can help make your pantry Gut Recovery-friendly. These recommendations are particularly helpful in supplementing the Step 1 content:
- Cinnamon – This is organic ground Ceylon cinnamon, and it’s “true” cinnamon. Great for blood sugar balancing, and adding sweetness to foods without added sugar.
- Sea Salt – Salt is a very important electrolyte, but you want to have the right kind of salt! Iodized salt is partially responsible for the Hashimoto’s epidemic (read my article to find out why!), so it is important to choose non-iodized varieties. I like to use Celtic sea salt or Himalayan pink salt.
- Beef Tallow – I like this original non-hydrogenated, 100% grass-fed, grass finished beef tallow crafted using 100% beef suet. It is sourced exclusively from sustainable U.S. Small Family ranches. It’s safe to use for high heat cooking.
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil – Studies have shown that extra virgin olive oil lowers “bad” cholesterol, cuts your risk of heart disease and stroke, and can lower blood pressure. It can also reduce inflammation, enable calcium in your food to be better absorbed into your bones, and regulate your immune system, as it’s loaded with antioxidants and polyphenols. Moreover, as a healthy fat, it helps to keep you feeling full longer after meals. However, I avoid buying olive oil in stores, where the oils can sit on the shelf for months, growing stale, musty, and eventually rancid. Some may even be adulterated with added peanut or canola oils to cut costs! So, I became a member of the Fresh-Pressed Olive Oil Club, and now it’s my new favorite way to get pure, unadulterated extra virgin olive oil delivered to my doorstep.
- Shiritaki Noodles (glucomannan) – These noodles are gluten-free and grain-free, plus they pack very few calories. During an elimination diet, they might help with that pasta craving! They are made with glucomannan, which is a soluble fiber that attracts mycotoxins (toxins from mold) and moves through the GI tract unchanged. It can absorb up to 50 times its weight, and thus can possibly cause constipation, so increased water intake is ideal when taking this binder. Glucomannan is considered a prebiotic and may not be suitable for those who have SIBO.
- Flavor Chef Bone Broth – Beyond the flavor, this go-to bone broth in chicken and beef is great for healing the gut, boosting the immune system, and rejuvenating your tired joints. (Receive 10% off using code Thyroid10).
- Fermented Cabbage – Thirty Acre Farm grows and produces more than 100,000 lbs of Lacto Fermented sauerkraut, ruby kraut, kimchi, gingered carrots, hot sauce and sour dill pickles that are rich in nutrients, promote the growth of beneficial probiotics, improve digestion, and boost the immune system.
- Rasa Coffee Alternative – These yummy adaptogenic blends are packed with herbs that provide lasting energy, while nourishing your adrenals. They have a variety of options, including coffee blends, caffeine-free blends, and even an AIP-Friendly version! (Use code IZABELLAWENTZPHARMD to get 15% off.)
- NUCOS Organic Paleo Wraps – This grain-free tortilla is certified organic and free of gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, yeast, and added sugars. Made with just three natural ingredients, this tortilla has a low glycemic index, meaning it can help curb one’s appetite and keep blood sugar levels stable. It can be used for tacos, wraps, sandwiches, and more!
- Fermented Coconut Water – I love CocoBiotic by Body Ecology, but please note that it’s currently sold out (you can sign up to be notified when it’s back in stock). I also like Tula’s CocoKefir, which you can find at Whole Foods.
- Mushroom Coffee Mix – This has the same great taste as coffee, but without the jitters, crashing, or stomach issues as with regular coffee products. Note: Be sure to look for caffeine-free options.
- Alcohol-free Vanilla – This vanilla flavoring is free of gluten, sugar, corn, and palm oil, and can be added to recipes that call for alcohol-free vanilla.
- Primal Kitchen Avocado Oil Mayo – Traditional mayonnaise brands use ingredients that many people with autoimmune disease may be sensitive to, such as soy — but Primal Kitchen Mayo offers a delicious mayo alternative, made of organic eggs and avocado oil! Use code THYROID10 to save 10% off your order.
